Over the past twenty years international hotel chains, increasing legislation and the public’s demand for value has changed the face of hotels in the United Kingdom. Most hotels with real character have become increasingly expensive. “Budget” hotels have become bland and, whilst they offer a consistent product, they can be soul-less places to stay. We didn’t like this trend and so in 1998 we formed Hoby Hotels to own and operate “mid-market” hotels with character and history without breaking our guests’ bank accounts.

Operating historic buildings as hotels can be challenging. We knew that when we set out on this path. By their nature they require more care and attention, but their character comes through. Maintenance and renovation takes more time and cost. We cannot order twenty, ten or even two identical rooms! Each one has its own identity.

Each of our hotels has a planned maintenance and upgrade programme. We continually monitor the comments of our guests and, where possible, we incorporate these suggestions into our plans. We might not be able to incorporate guests’ suggestions immediately, but they certainly go onto the “wish list”. We know that the majority of our guests believe that we deliver both good service and value. That is our intention. To operate Hotels with History and Character whilst providing good Service and Value.
